I'm sorry

I watched a retrospective about Saturday Night Live last night.

Lorne Michaels stated his methodology, which can be applied to romantic comedies or any light moment in your novel.
1. When constructing a skit, if it is about things unsaid by the object of your humor and you* say it, it is funny.
2. Humor is truth. Sometimes telling the obvious lie illuminates the truth.
*You = the character who says or thinks something funny.

Would anybody like to supply a humorous exchange or monologue from his or her novel?

If you don’t have a funny bone in your body or you have no clue what I’m talking about…well, then, I’m Sorry, (so sorry), by Brenda Lee 1960. She belts this number one hit out at the age of 15.

Okay, what's so funny about I'm Sorry? Or how does this song apply to the subject of this post? Or am I pulling your leg? Or is this haunting melody, something I just couldn't get out of my head when I heard it again recently?

Coincidently, I'm sorry my romantic comedy, Double Happiness, doesn't have a bigger audience. If you too lament your sales numbers join me in feeling forlorn.

  1. I assumed his comment, and the fact he wore no wedding ring, meant he wasn't married. Not that I considered him an eligible man. I hoped to meet one sometime, just not now when my job was at stake. Still, I liked the fact he wasn’t one of those married men who apparently justified an extra-marital fling as long as he left his wife behind in a different zip-code." Bob. Sorry. This was the best I could do on short notice.

  2. Thanks, Bob. Now I can't get that tune out of my head, too.

  3. Well, "love is blind," even in a romantic comedy :)

A funny line? Well, I don't write funny well, but from one of my novels. Amy is hiding behind the bar, hiding from her ex husband, and spying on him. She gets caught by the bartender who says: "Ya don't have to chase that lime whell, Honey. I'll getcha another?" And then he winks and walks away.

I have short stories that are published and not making me any money. Not even sure the anthologies have any readers, besides the authors. I can relate.

  4. Those lines are funny, Dolorah and Phyllis. Toni, Brenda Lee is haunting.
Here's what's funny about "I'm Sorry." IMO, Somehow a 15 yr old girl sings about a tremendous and mature truth about empathy and deep felt love and she totally and amazingly nailed it. I have to go back to when I and others were fifteen. I know emotions were huge, but were they understood with great introspection?
